Historic Milestones

1915 - First Citrus Processing Plant in America—Florida Fruit Products Co.

1920 - First Citrus Concentrated produced

1923 - First Fruit Juice in cans produced in commercial quantities

1930 - Flash Pasteurization perfected and applied commercially

1935 - The Florida Citrus Commission is established by the State Legislature. The commission eventually leads to the establishment of the Florida Department of Citrus.

1945 - Through a combined effort of the Florida Citrus Commission and the USDA, citrus concentrate is developed at the Lake Alfred Citrus Experiment Station, earning U.S. Patent 2,543,109.

1946 - Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice first produced commercially

1954 - Chilled "Not from Concentrate" juice introduced

1957 - The first big freeze of this century brings snow to citrus growing areas in central Florida, causing a setback from which the industry quickly recovers. Production for the year reached 135,520,000 boxes.

1960 - Hurricane Donna plows through central Florida groves with an estimated loss of 50 to 90% of the grapefruit crop and a 35 to 50% loss of oranges.

1968 - The regulatory arm of the Florida Citrus Commission becomes the Florida Department of Citrus.

1971 - The Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC) is adopted as the official name of the Lake Alfred Experiment Station.

1987 - Calcium-added orange juice introduced

1989 - The "Christmas Freeze" practically wipes out the citrus industry north of Interstate 4 in Central Florida, causing an even greater exodus of citrus growers to south Florida.

1989 - Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice introduced

1994 - Not From Concentrate Juice in vending machines

1995 - Not From Concentrate Orange Juice + Calcium & Vitamins introduced

1996 - Florida Department of Citrus launches a new health and wellness campaign with the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes as partners.

1998 - From Concentrate Grapefruit Juice + Calcium & Vitamins introduced

2001 - From Concentrate Low Acid introduced

2002 - Vitamin D added citrus juice introduced

2003 - Plant sterols used to create first cholesterol-lowering orange juice

2004 - Florida Department of Citrus continues to build upon its health and wellness campaign and www.floridajuice.com is launched.

2008 - Florida Department of Citrus launches www.gofloridagrapefruit.com and www.freshfruitfromflorida.com.
